Caring for your Teeth During Pregnancy

Taking good care of yourself while you're pregnant is important, and your teeth are no exception. During pregnancy, your teeth and gums may be extra sensitive. So how do you care for your teeth during pregnancy? Here are some tips you may want to consider:

Follow a Good Dental Hygiene Routine During Pregnancy

As soon as you know you’re pregnant, continue to brush at least twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste and floss regularly. This will build a strong foundation for your second trimester when most dental changes occur. Changes that you may experience are caused by pregnancy hormones that affect your teeth and gums. This is fairly common during pregnancy and not a huge reason for alarm. Generally, you will notice some slight swelling on the gum line and possibly some pink on your toothbrush. Simply make note of any changes and share your thoughts with your dentist. This way your dentist can develop a baseline and monitor the condition of your gums throughout your pregnancy.

Increase Your Calcium and Vitamin D Intake

Sufficient calcium during your pregnancy will protect your teeth and meet the nutritional needs of your developing baby. Good sources of dietary calcium include low fat versions of products such as: milk, cheese, yogurt or calcium fortified milk. By also increasing your vitamin D levels you will allow your body to process the calcium more efficiently. Cheese, margarine, fatty fish, and eggs are all good sources of vitamin D.

Managing "Morning Sickness" During Pregnancy

If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting take special care of yourself. Resist the urge to brush immediately after vomiting to avoid scratching the enamel on your teeth. Instead, rinse your mouth with plain water, use a fluoridated mouthwash, and finish with a final rinse of water. About an hour later you can brush your teeth with a smaller and softer toothbrush. Sometimes using a toddler toothbrush with a tiny head will reduce the gag reflex, if having anything in your mouth bothers you. Listening to music and focusing on your breathing can be helpful if you’re having trouble.
